Greedy - Headless Chickens

Here it is the Headless Chickens third album "Greedy" with
many thanks to Bazzil of the Prehistoric Sounds blog fame,
for this wonderful album released in 1997.
Heres what they say about it on the flying nun site.

Chris Matthews' guitar and voice are at the forefront and the
mood is altogether more rocking. Greedy's a dramatic album,
with its songs wrapped in a blend of scary samples,
crunching loops and lyrical nightmares.
The end result is what the Headless Chickens have always
managed to achieve on record: in today's electrode-up
post-grunge world, Greedy still blurs the lines people want to
put up around musical styles and -- crooning, sneering,
yelling through a megaphone --
Chris Matthews still sounds like the most convincing frontman
around. Fiona McDonald's all but gone; she left the band after
recording the hit single "George" and that song is her only
lead vocal on this album, although she sings one duet
("Chicken Little") and contributes backing vocals to a few
other tunes.

Pink + Blue

I had a request from Anna for the other side of the Out of Nowhere
cassette release of the track "The Arrangements"
The other side was a band called Pink + Blue. I've managed
to track down this which is most likely not the other side of the
Out of Nowhere tape, but another cassette all together.
The only other Pink + Blue release I've heard of is the b side of
what was the "5 new songs" Go-betweens/ Pink + Blue cassette,
which I haven't been able to track down.
The download is of a 5 min track or tracks called
John-Nixon + Anti-Music and the photo you see above.
I'm a bit scarce on information here so any help would be
appreciated, let us know anything about the band,
this or any other recordings or anything else that takes your fancy.

Amunda - Civilised World

Amumda is devrived from the Arrente word for meeting place
which is associated with the spring at Heavitree Gap in the
MacDonnell Ranges at Alice Springs.

This the 2nd release from Amunda is an unknown gem of a CD.
Formed in 1985 this album was recorded in 1991, their 1st
release being the tape only "Better late than never"
released in 1989.
This album sometimes sounds like a polished version of
the western desert sound, sometimes rock, other times
a little bit country(in a nice way) and even a bit jazzy.
Both vocalists Paul and Rachael excel and the musicians
are first rate.
This is music from the heart of Australia, music from a
part of the country few Australians living on the outside
edges of the country have a clue about.
When I visited the western desert in 1990 I discovered a
a place that looked and felt so alien to my concept of
Australia I was shocked. The odd feeling of being so far
from the ocean, the isolation of being in the middle of one
of the largest and most isolated deserts in the world.
You meet people for whom English is their 3rd
language, with maybe Pitjantjatjara as the 1st,
German as the 2nd. Thats because in 1877 two Lutheran
missionaries from Germany made an overland trek from
Bethany in the Barossa Valley region of South Australia
to set up a permanent mission which became Hermansburg,
beating the frontier to the center.
In Alice I discovered a town of 25000 that had something
like 5000 US servicemen and their families living in this
small community, that is such a long way from any large
population center, working in the military base "Pine Gap"
This is music that has that authentic feel, that speaks to
you of concerns from a place you may or may not relate to,
but its worth trying.

Track List
01 Roll on the wind
02 Civilised world
03 Look around
04 Ain't right to me
05 Heart beat
06 Don't look back
06 Soldier
07 Feel it
08 Jam in B minor
09 Living on a dream
10 Kid's inside
11 Take
12 Is it real
13 How could I know.

Headless Chickens - Stunt Clown

Stunt Clown the first Lp from New Zealand wonder
band the Headless Chickens. Recorded in early 1988 it
sold well and received positive critical response.
The material on the album is quite diverse, though lacking
in direction, and was at the time quite different to the
typical' NZ music sound. Do The Headless Chicken
is described as "an epic featuring at least two scintillating
guitar riffs and ending with a drum machine that's
almost terrifying." Star At Night was also a highlight with its
cynicism and sarcasm evident in the line
"Hip hooray, hip hooray, here comes another day."
The first single off the album was Donka which remains a
favorite with fans.
A tour of Australia was undertaken in late 1988.

Redgum - Midnight Sun

Redgums's swan song Midnight Sun is a fine record, having been able
to overcome the shock of John Schumann leaving the band in 1986,
they released this Lp that year, a last single "Roll it on Robbie" (1987)
after which Atkinson left.
The remaining members performed until 1990
before breaking up for good.
Bring us to the end of a band which formed back in 1975, becoming
the greatest musical export from Adelaide
and one of Australia's best.
These days John Schumann & the Vagabond Crew (including Hugh)
are performing, doing shows at woodford last year and john, post
Redgum Schumann released two solo albums before pursuing a career
with the Australian Democrats ,
standing for the South Australian seat of Mayo in the 1998
Federal election and only losing by a small margin.
Very nearly knocking off the governments Foreign Affairs Minister.
He left the Democrats in 2000 and returned to further solo works.

When I worked on the Latin American Show on 4zzz in the late 80's
the song "Blood upon the rain" was a favorite, I must of played it
every time and the beautiful version of "La Partida" the
haunting Victor Jara song. This song is a fantastic insightful
song about the struggle for freedom in Latin America which was
my focus for many years and Redgum were singing about it.
Theres plenty more politics on this album, "Talk",
"Running with the hurricane" and "Too many dollars"
all showing the band has lost none of their insight. Also theres
"When your luck runs out" another wonderful Hugh McDonald,
life on the land Masterpiece.
But its "Blood on the rain" and the fantastic
"Running with the hurricane" that make this for me,
with songs like this I was glad they kept going.

Running with the hurricane - Atkinson/McDonald

White domes on sacred land, B52s in Arnhem land
Cold wars buccaneers, lasers in the stratosphere
Theres a shadow across the sun,
alarms of struggle and fight.
Theres poisoned seeds in the perfumed garden
and the spectra of an endless night

Thunder in the distance, Running with the hurricane
Feel the cold winds tuning, keep the faith burning
Fire in the Ukraine, dust on the high plains
Thunder in the distance, running with the hurricane

Vogue fashions, empty passions, world banks,
corporation think tanks.
Feeding us our new-made views,
With our Weeties and our septic news.
Geriatric G-grade actor, power in his paternal smile
His inane quotes are last years jokes
Now we judge all his lies on style

Thunder in the distance, Running with the hurricane
Feel the cold winds tuning, keep the faith burning
Fire in the Ukraine, dust on the high plains
Thunder in the distance, running with the hurricane

Melt-down, southbound, the winds are blowing gale force
Gather up the children, batten down the doors
Hopes like a beacon in the howling night
Muruoa, Pine Gap, Greenham Common
Together its going to be a long, hard fight

Thunder in the distance, Running with the hurricane
Feel the cold winds tuning, keep the faith burning
Fire in the Ukraine, dust on the high plains
Thunder in the distance, running with the hurricane

Rambo, cult machismo, Armageddon, the clouds keep spreading
Warriors rule by fear, fission for the profiteers
Mass march, rally in the twilight, heart and soul, a call for peace
If power is blocked through the ballot box
Then we'll vote in the open streets

This is the sort of song running through my head when I drove
to the front gates of pine gap in 1990, to see for my self the
cold war infrastructure in the center of my country.
It was Redgum and other influences that had led me to
this point and now some 18 years on, as Redgum say
"Nothing much has changed here but the skyline"

The Go-Betweens - The Cassette Releases 1981 - 5 New Songs, other rare early songs & interviews

For a very special treat many thanks to Steve aka duckdogtwo who
compiled this wonderful collection of rare and early Go-Betweens.
This is what Steve says about these recordings.

I was going to tart these up and compile them but they
sounded pretty good anyway.

These are from my tapes done four or five years ago,
my first transfers.

A couple of these tracks are on the remastered
Send Me A Lullaby,

but I'm not sure which ones.
The second 3PBS interview cuts off abruptly,
not sure if there was more.

The Distant Violins scan is mine, the rest I found on the net.
Couldn't find a decent one of Fast Forward.

I've been listening to this today and its fantastic.
Theres songs I haven't heard before,
some great live and demos of well known songs and
the interviews are amazing. Especially the 1/2 hour 4zzz one,
its amazing to hear these guys talk in depth when they are
right at the start of it all, like 19 years old.
Theres quite a lot of talk about Peter Milton Walsh's brief
membership in the band, why He joined and why He left,
record deals, other Brisbane bands round that time
and songwriting, it really is fantastic.
You'll just have to download it and have a listen.
And don't forget to thank Steve in the comments.

Track List
01 - Five New Songs - Heaven Says.
02 - Five New Songs - Undo What You Did.
03 - Five New Songs - Cracked Wheat.
04 - Five New Songs - People Know.

06 - Missing Link Demo - One Word.
07 - Missing Link Demo - Hope.

The Dreaming Festival

'
The dreaming festival held over the June long weekend (6,7,8 &9th)
is fast coming up.
Australia's largest Indigenous arts Festival is being held for the
4th time, at the Woodford Folk Festival site, 1 hour north of Brisbane.
The Dreaming is a vibrant, exciting and a valuable destination where
local, national and international audiences look forward to their
annual ceremony time along with the most comprehensive showcase
of Indigenous arts from across the country and around the world.
This three day and four night festival, features performing arts
venues, bars, Ceremony grounds, traditional healing, galleries,
rituals, campfire story circles and a mass of stalls, workshop avenue
and food outlets.
Presented by the Queensland Folk Federation ,the program also
includes film & literature components, performing arts, new media
and digital technologies, food & wine fare, comedy, ceremony,
exhibitions, performance artists, physical theatre, Visual arts,
craft workshops, music program, street performers, musicals
and a youth program.
I'm very excited because "No fixed Address" are reforming for 3
performances, its a fantastic program even without that.
I hope to make it on Saturday and take my 3 young boys, I
consider it part of their education.
It should be an excellent time and I would encourage all you
readers in the South East Queensland Area to think about
going to this world class festival in your backyard.
Check out their excellent Web site here
and if your going to be there let me know in the comments.

Redgum - Frontline

By 1984, the Redgum line-up comprised Schumann, Truman, Atkinson, McDonald,
Stephen Cooney (bass, didgeridoo, mandolin, banjo), Michael Spicer
(piano) and Brian Czempinski (drums).
Redgum's fifth album, Frontline, was released in August 1984.
A compilation album 'Everythings Legal Anything Goes' was released
in November 1984.
Redgum toured the UK and Europe in the latter half of 1985
and released a compilation album in a number of territories.
The band was well received on the festival circuit
and earned itself a strong and loyal following in London during its time there.
By May may 1986, co-founder John Schumann had left the band, it
was the beginning of the end for Redgum.
So in a way this is the last Redgum Album, it is the last John appears
on and many fans believed John was the bands greatest asset.
Newest member Hugh McDonald contributes "Spirit Of the Land "
showing he is worthy, but Micheal Atkinson is the song writing star
penning 4 of the strongest songs on the album.
This is a brilliant Lp, many consider it to be their finest, it produced
the hit single "I've been to bali too" perhaps Redgum's funnest song.
Full of fantastic songs, covering rock , country and folk it is sublime.
The political and social commentary is as strong as ever and the
earlier more clumsy songwriting is gone, we have a confident
mature band who are at their peak.
"Asio" is a fantastic rocker, "Friday night" even more so was released
as a single, "Spirit of the land" is one of their finest songs,
"Gladstone Pier " is a heart wrenching epic, of course we
have the full band version of the beautiful "Working Girls"
and the album finishes with the beautiful instrumental "Hira"
One of the best albums ever released by an Australian act,
it is unmistakably Australian and a true masterpiece.

Redgum - Caught In The Act

By 1983 Redgum had become one of the biggest crowd pulling acts in
Australia, so this release was capitalizing on what was one of their
biggest strengths, performing live. I did see them once and I did
see John Schumann perform solo after Redgum and they were good,
But don't take my word for it listen to this LP.
This album also has a live version of the song that turned John into
a songwriting legend, "I was only nineteen."
I actually met John at a songwriting seminar he was giving, He
talked a lot about the process that led to this song I can only say
it is a spellbinding story.
The song was released as a studio recored single which never
made to an official album until the greatest hits ones, so this
live version was it for a LP, for quite a while.
The single released in march 83 was number 1 for 2 weeks
here and stayed in the top 40 for 4 months.

I Was Only Nineteen - John Schumann

Mum and Dad and Denny saw the passing-out parade
at Puckapunyal
It was a long march from cadets.
The sixth battalion was the next to tour,
and it was me who drew the card.
We did Canungra, Shoalwater before we left.

And Townsville lined the footpaths as we marched
down to the quay
This clipping from the paper shows us young
and strong and clean.
And there's me in my slouch hat with my SLR and greens.
God help me, I was only nineteen.

From Vung Tau, riding Chinooks, to the dust at Nui Dat
I'd been in and out of choppers now for months.
But we made our tents a home, VB and pinups on the lockers
And an Asian orange sunset through the scrub.

And can you tell me, doctor, why I still can't get to sleep?
And night-time's just a jungle dark and a barking M16?
And what's this rash that comes and goes,
can you tell me what it means?
God help me, I was only nineteen.

A four week operation when each step could mean your
last one on two legs
It was a war within yourself.
But you wouldn't let your mates down till they had you dusted off
So you closed your eyes and thought about something else.

Then someone yelled out "Contact!" and the bloke
behind me swore
We hooked in there for hours, then a God almighty roar
Frankie kicked a mine the day that mankind kicked the moon,
God help me, he was going home in June.

I can still see Frankie, drinking tinnies in the Grand Hotel
On a thirty-six hour rec leave in Vung Tau
And I can still hear Frankie, lying screaming in the jungle
Till the morphine came and killed the bloody row.

And the Anzac legends didn't mention mud and blood and tears
And the stories that my father told me never seemed quite real.
I caught some pieces in my back that I didn't even feel
God help me, I was only nineteen.

And can you tell me, doctor, why I still can't get to sleep?
And why the Channel Seven chopper chills me to my feet?
And what's this rash that comes and goes,
can you tell me what it means?
God help me, I was only nineteen.

red eye records 1990 asides & besides - the first 5 years

Red Eye Records is a Sydney based indy record label started in 1985
by graphic designer John Foy.
Its debut release was a solo single from ex-Hoodoo Gurus drummer
James Baker issued as The James Baker Experience.
It also ran two other spin off labels Black Eye Records and Third Eye.
The label went on to release The Cruel Sea, John Kennedy's
Love Gone Wrong,The Bhagvad Guitars, Beasts of Bourbon,

In 1990 the label was distributed through Polydor who later
acquired Red Eye closing it as an imprint moving some acts
across to Universal.
This Album contains many of those acts, from what was one of the
greatest record labels, not least because they signed up the
legendary John Kennedy.
As the title suggests theres both Asides and hard to get Bsides

The Mexican Spitfires.

Riley Lee - Wild Honey Dreaming

Now for something a bit zen.
While Riley Lee was born in the states he has made Australia
home for a long time now and made a huge contribution to
music in this country. A master of the shakuhachi (bamboo flute)
this album is something very special. Combined with didjeridu this is
spellbinding music, which evokes the Australian outback
in an amazing way.
I find the
shakuhachi very ambient, an instrument which relaxes
you and clears your mind, mediative I suppose, if you find this
description in any way getting your interest levels up I'd
recommend you grab it
I'm sure I saw Riley play a few times back in the Maleny
folk festival days and he didn't disappoint.

RILEY LEE began playing the shakuhachi in
Japan in 1971, studying with Chikuho Sakai until 1980,
nd has been a student of Katsuya Yokoyama since 1984
He was given the rank of Dai Shihan (grand master) in 1980.
Riley was born in Plainview Texas USA in 1951, and moved to
Shawnee Oklahoma USA in 1957, where, aged 13,
he became the bass player of the award winning rock band
"The Workouts".
He and his family moved to Hawai'i in 1966.
He first went to Japan in 1970, and returned in 1971,
when he began his shakuhachi studies.
He lived there continuously until 1977.
He moved to Honolulu in 1978 where he began teaching
privately and performing
and founded the Chikuho School
of Shakuhachi of Hawaii.
He was a lecturer of the shakuhachi at the University of
Hawaii until leaving for Australia in 1986 to take up a PhD
fellowship at the University of Sydney.
He has been instrumental in creating a professional presence
of traditional Japanese music in Australia.
He has introduced the shakuhachi to a diverse audience as
both a soloist and with other performers of such instruments
as harp, cello, saxophone, tabla, guitar, didjeridu,
and symphony orchestra. He helped found the Australian
Shakuhachi Society in 1996.
In 1995, he also co-founded with Ian Cleworth, Australia's
dynamic Japanese festival drum group, TaikOz.
It has since become one of Australia's premier performance
groups
, He has made over fifty commercially released
recordings since 1980,
which are sold worldwide
on a number of labels.

Angie Pepper & the Passengers - It´s Just That I Miss You

The Passengers were born from the Sydney inner city punk culture
in 1979. They were the first band released by Phantom Records.
The Phantom label began some time after the shop with a single
by the Passengers in early 1980.
Taking their name from an Iggy Pop song,
the band was fronted by Angie Pepper, and also included former
Survivor and future New Christ Jim Dickson on bass,
with Jeff Sullivan (later of the Flaming Hands)on guitar
and Steve Harris on keyboards.
Peppers vocals and the sixties girl-group nature of the lyrics
made an instant comparison to Blondie inevitable,
but Harris electric piano sound was substantially different from
Blondie's approach.
This Cd is a long-awaited collection of material both from the
Passengers and solo Angie Pepper tracks which were written
and produced by(and featured the guitar of) her husband,
Radio Birdman's Deniz Tek
Frozen World was a minor hit in Sydney upon its original release
n the mid-80s, as was Girlfriend's Boyfriend.
Also featured is the gorgeous track It's Just That I Miss You,
later recorded by the Flaming Hands and a version of The Visitors
Miss You Too Much.

Track Listing:

1. Frozen World
2. Miss You Too Much
3. Last Chance
4. Why Tell Me?
5. It's Not Easy
6. It's Just That I Miss You
7. Blind Night Out

Errol H Tout - Sounds of Swimming

Errol H Tout a musician/architect from Perth, released this album
Sounds of Swimming in 1987. I remember hearing it on 4zzz at the
time and being very impressed. Ambient, mostly instrumental guitar
music is how I'd describe this, very nice. I ripped this from a friends
copy, I doubt you would find this very easily,
I assume it was a very limited release.
Errol now days is a full time lecturer in the Department of
Architecture,Faculty of the Built Environment Art + Design at the
Curtin University of Technology in Western Australia.
However he worked for many years as a musician,
he has released many albums of original music,
produced albums for other artists, written film soundtracks,
appeared on a number of compilation albums,
performed extensively around Australia
and even composed music for orthopaedic surgery videos.

These are his major releases.

Grant McLennan Radio Shows

He was brought up in a house of women
in a city of heat that gave its children
Faith in the fable of coral and fish
told them the world was something to miss.

Grant McLennan died in his sleep at his home in Brisbane
on the 6th of may 2006, aged 48.
Its been two years and I remember it like yesterday.
The shock, the disbelief. The friends who likewise
felt the world had changed and it had.
I only met him once and he was very
down to earth, I told him how we had cut our
wedding cake to the song
"Love is a sign"
and he said it was a lovely wedding song.

His songs are perhaps best summed up by
Amanda Brown who said

"Grant's songs captured an Australia that was influenced
by
his love for contemporary American writers like
Cormac McCarthy, Richard Ford and Raymond Carver
and songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen
and Patti Smith.

These writers inform his images of Australia,
which range from the landscapes tinged with nostalgia
and loss,
suburban life, epic narratives and,
of course, exquisite love songs."

Today to celebrate Grant's great legacy I have a collection
of radio shows from Europe recorded between 1993 and 1995
This is mostly in between Fireboy and Horsebreaker Star,
with some stuff after Horsebreaker Star.
Some with a band, but mostly solo and with a few
songs unreleased. Fantastic quality and includes an
excellent interview.

Various Artists - Also Used and Recommeded By

An earlier compilation from RRR released in 1988 I've ripped from the
vinyl. This contains some wonderful Australian bands with the lions
share from Melbourne. Worth noting is Crown of thorns, which was
Chris Wilson's band.Chris has I think the best blues voice I've heard
to come out of this country and is one of the best harmonica players.
The Sparklers were one of the best bands to come out of Sydney in
the late 80's, a substantial pop band with an irrepressible sense of
melody. The band that Melanie Oxley got her start in.
Another highlight is the closing track Gondwanaland's Rainforest,
Ambient brilliance which is made by Charlie McMahon's
amazing didgeridoo.

Track List

01. the stems - at first sight
02. weddings parties anything - bright lights tonight
03. blue ruin - hellu'va woman
04. the sparklers - overworking
05. the everys - this town
06. crown of throrns - face in the mirror
07. the triffids - love the fever
08. the nubiles - going' to the country
09. god - my pal
10. the church - perfect childv

Used And Recovered By - Compilation By RRR 102.7 FM

A great compilation of what many would call covers of
classic Australian songs. Released in 1990, a project of
Melbourne's RRR, a very hip community radio station,
this CD brings together some of the biggest underground
artist with a number of more unknown acts.
Many of the songs covered here are very well known
in mainstream circles, others less so, but these songs
have been transformed, dare I say even improved.
Not Drowning Waving cover the Mason/Newman song
Kitchen Man, most unexpected and brilliant.
A band called Ripe cover the Kilbey classic
Under the Milky Way which is very nice.
Another artist I don't know, Mary Jo Starr
does a beautiful version of the Hunters classic
Throw Your Arms Around Me
Wedding Parties Anything cover David McCombs
classic Wild Open Road transforming it into a
folk song as only they could of.
We also have songs which form the backbone
off MMM's Australian classic rock eternally
repeated playlist, which here sound nothing
like the originals, definite improvments.
A couple of Angels songs, ACDC, Australian Crawl,
you get the idea.
Sea Stories transform You Shook Me All Night Long,
complete with violin I could hear the Triffids doing
this song. The Killjoys cover of the Seekers,
Another You is glorious and you have to hear
Rob Craw doing Am I Ever Gonna See your Face
Again, to believe it.
Paul Kelly and the Messengers steal the show with
their cover of Reckless, beautiful and haunting,
with Chris Wilson on harmonica,
a fitting end to the album.

Various Artists - Brisbane singles

Today we have an eclectic collection of 12 Brisbane singles released
between 1978 and 1983.
Not your usual greatest hits, but some of my favorites.

Track list
01. purty vacant - kingswoods
02. the commissarar's song - the kingswoods

03. task force - razar

04. stamp out disco - razar

05. summer vaction - presidents eleven

06. don't follow me - presidents eleven

07. i need two heads - go-betweens

08. stop before you say it - go-betweens

09. brisbane blacks - dennis colon and the magpies

10. don't give in - dennis colon and the magpies

11. the sharks - freud

12. the sharks - lobotomy

"The Kingswoods", who later went by the name "The Kingwood trio",
start off with their punkabilly cover of the pistols song that
changed my musical life forever when I heard it back in grade 9.
Great fun and the b side, which is all part of the single
experience, is an odd song like so many b sides are.

For the next single we have a classic, "Razars" "Task Force", with b side
"Stamp out disco". Released in 1978 this song was a response to
the task force set up by the Brisbane police to stamp out
the growing do it yourself punk movement in Brisbane.
Quite a lot of discussion about this in the excellent
Brisbane Bands Doco that came out in the late 80's.
Great late 70's style punk.

"Summer Vacation" with b side Don't follow me is one of the
greatest singles to come out of Brisbane. The song was
voted number 1 in the 4zzz hot hundred that year and
is just a fantastic song, pity this band never recorded
an album.

"I need two heads" with b side "Stop before you say it",
is "The Go-betweens", in between their 1st and 2nd album.
Recorded in Scotland in 1980,the only single here not
recorded in Brisbane and with Steven Daly
not Lindy on drums. A classic song

"Dennis Conlon and the Magpies", better known as
"Mop and the Dropouts"give us the single "Brisbane Blacks"
with "Don't give in" on the flip.
A classic Brisbane single that I was given by Mop himself
many years ago when I was taking his nephew
to work with me.

To finish off we have "The Sharks" with "Freud" and b side,
"Lobotomy"The only one here not from my collection
I was sent this recently by the wonderful Bazzil from
Prehistoric sounds.
A fantastic single from a band I know so little about.
From the late 70's era this band are more power pop
than punk and much more polished than many of
the other bands around at the time.
Many thanks to Bazzil.

Please leave in the comments any additional info, experiences,
or just comments and if you have any Brisbane band singles
not here I'd love to see some links.
