Redgum - Everything's Legal Anything Goes

The last official release by the band before John Schumann
left, Everything's Legal Anything Goes takes its name from
the single Asio of the last album before it and is a compilation
album with tracks spanning their career.
The thing about is the number of tracks that are previously
unreleased versions of some of their greatest songs.
Also 3 singles that never made it to albums.
Robert sent me these tracks but I have tracked down the
entire LP for this post. For you Redgum completests its
well worth having.

Track List
01-just another moment on your own
(single only release)

02-i've been to bali too
03-the diamantina drover
04-gladstone pier
05-i was only nineteen
(single only release)

06-the long run
(Previously unreleased version)

07-it doesn't matter to me
(Previously unreleased version)

08-killing floor
(Previously unreleased version)

09-a.s.i.o.
10-where ya gonna run to
(Previously unreleased version)

11-poor ned
12-the drover's dog
(single only release)

Asio - Redgum

White door, ninth floor, silent number,
it's autumn on a cold avenue
Telex intercept, he sips a cigarette,
warms up his V.D.U.

He gets his kicks from microchips,
orders from the C.I.A.
Birobugs and lasers, casual surveillance,
boardrooms and communiques

Don't use your phone and don't use mine
Don't speak treason, they're tapping the li-ine

Break-in, stake out, tell it in code
Everything is legal, anything goes
The nights gettin' darker and the ill wind blows
Your life's in a databank at ASIO

Trained in the ghettos of the Lebanon,
truncheons and an M16
Selling skag, a U.N. flag,
now he's trading in securities

Darwin rendezvous, a B-52,
trenchcoat slightly creased
From a coup in Asia, A U.S. Air Force major
Buying dirty laundry, swearin' it's for peace

Infiltration, we'll never know
Just like Chile but the bruises don't show-ow

Break-in, stake out, tell it in code
Everything is legal, anything goes
The nights get darker and the ill wind blows
Your life's in a databank at ASIO

Spook behind the bar, unmarked car,
rumour hangs like stale perfume
Flushing under beds, sniffin' out the Reds,
nobody can feel immune

No names, no stress, no blame, no press
Clean when the dirty work's done
Allocate a budget, special branch thugs
Do it for the practice, do it for the fun

Midnight, flashlight, crash on the door
Rats on the table, blood on the floor-oor

Break-in, stake out, tell it in code
Everything is legal, anything goes
The nights get darker and the ill wind blows
Your life's in a databank at ASIO

This was based on what we knew of ASIO’s techniques
in 1984. They were much more physical then.
That’s now unnecessary: the song’s references to extensive
IT surveillance have proved to be rather prescient.
Incidentally, public servants later impressed upon us
how bulky our own ASIO files were. –Michael Atkinson.

Matt Williamson - Shaking Hands

Matt Williamson is one this countries great folk artists,
unsung in a country that doesn't appreciate its folk artist,
incredibly humble and more than generous giving away
him wonderful music.
This is a beautiful album a perfect recording, I'd think it
was an studio recording rather than live radio preformance.
Intimate acoustic, brilliant work from all the musicians.
This is the music I'd expect to hear on the radio heaven
Matt sings of in the 3rd song.
But enough from me download the album and
let us know what you think.
Now over to Matt

This was a live gig on charles sturt university
radio in bathurst

Kev Carmony - Jack Deelin 7"

Tomorrow is the day the dominant culture here is Australia celebrates
Australia Day, to me it is always Invasion Day, the day the full
invasion of Australia began. A better day to celebrate the birth of a
nation could be found, this date the day the British landed in Sydney
to unload their criminal cargo is a pretty bad choice. Federation day
when the nation really begun, December the 3rd when the flag of
stars was raised at the Eureka Stockade,
or Anzac day have been proposed.

Still it is what it is and the Union Jacks are already out in force,
so I post as my way of saying what I think.
I'm sure a few will disagree, Kev Carmody said it better than I ever
could, so I shall hand over to Kevs masterpiece "Thou shall not steal"
and his first single Jack Deelin, which has a rare live version of the
song dedicated to his dead uncle.

Tomorrow is also the day I started this blog, here with No Fixed
Address back in 2008,
so the SSS blog is 3 years old!

Download Jack Deelin 7 " single Here

Thou Shall Not Steel - Kev Carmody

1788 down Sydney Cove
The first boat-people land
Said sorry boys our gain's your loss
We gonna steal your land
And if you break our new British laws
For sure you're gonna hang
Or work your life like convicts
With chains on your neck and hands

CHORUS
They taught us
Oh Oh Black woman thou shalt not steal
Oh Oh Black man thou shalt not steal
We're gonna civilize
Your Black barbaric lives
And teach you how to kneel
But your history couldn't hide
The genocide
The hypocrisy to us was real
'cause your Jesus said
you're supposed to give the oppressed
a better deal
We say to you yes whiteman thou shalt not steal
Oh ya our land you'd better heal

Your science and technology Hey you can make a nuclear bomb
Development has increased the size to 3,000,000 megatons
But if you think that's progress
I suggest your reasoning is unsound
You shoulda found out long ago
You best keep it in the ground

Job and me and Jesus sittin'
Underneath the Indooroopilly bridge
Watchin' that blazin' sun go down
Behind the tall tree'd mountain ridge
The land's our heritage and spirit
Here the rightful culture's Black
and we sittin' here just wonderin'
When we get the land back

You talk of conservation
Keep the forest pristine green
Yet in 200 years your materialism
Has stripped the forests clean
A racist's a contradiction
That's understood by none
Mostly their left hand hold a bible
Their right hand holds a gun

Crazy days .. ... .

'Flood' sculpture at the Brisbane Powerhouse living up to its name.

I remember when i was a kid there was this one school holidays where it rained and rained and after a few weeks everything was soaking wet and then it just RAINED AND RAINED SOME MORE.. That was 1974 and ever since ppl said it would never happen again ...

I got this video from http://xesworld.com/?p=1160 but if you google youtube you can find a miliion more, if you live in Brisbane or most of Australia even you could turn on the old skool tube and see nothing else.

My Country

The love of field and coppice,
Of green and shaded lanes,
Of ordered woods and gardens
Is running in your veins.
Strong love of grey-blue distance,
Brown streams and soft, dim skies -
I know but cannot share it,
My love is otherwise.

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror –
The wide brown land for me!

The stark white ring-barked forests,
All tragic to the moon,
The sapphire-misted mountains,
The hot gold hush of noon,
Green tangle of the brushes
Where lithe lianas coil,
And orchids deck the tree-tops,
And ferns the warm dark soil.

Core of my heart, my country!
Her pitiless blue sky,
When, sick at heart, around us
We see the cattle die –
But then the grey clouds gather,
And we can bless again
The drumming of an army,
The steady soaking rain.

Core of my heart, my country!
Land of the rainbow gold,
For flood and fire and famine
She pays us back threefold.
Over the thirsty paddocks,
Watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness
That thickens as we gaze.

An opal-hearted country,
A wilful, lavish land –
All you who have not loved her,
You will not understand –
Though earth holds many splendours,
Wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly.

Arvo - Oriental Exotique bw Bikini/ Lost at sea

Peter sent me this mystery way back just before I got
married last year and went on a 6 week honeymoon.
Well I just found again in the dark recesses of my inbox
and here it is.
The mystery is does anyone out there know anything about
this band and this single. I did manage to find a video of the
single but nothing much else.
Released in 1984, recorded in Sydney.
So any recollections will be greatly appreciated.

Dr Jimmy Little with Karma County - Cattle and Cane

Uncle Jimmy has been playing professionally around this island of ours for so many years I cant count that high. He has been voted as a national treasure! he has been presented with an 'Order of Australia' and many honorary doctorates for music with many educational institutions. So much more info on the living legend can be found at his wiki post here. More importantly is his recent work of  The Jimmy Little Foundation - The Jimmy Little Foundation is working in a number of different areas with communities, government, schools and individuals to make sure we have a healthy future for Indigenous Australians. The Jimmy Little Foundation was set up to combat the upward curve of the disease and associated health problems among Australian Indigenous people through education and awareness.

The last vid for the day comes from a '10:30 Slot' best of 1999 on Rage the other night. I'm a big fan of the retro shows if you haven't noticed :)
It is Dr Jimmy (AO) doing his version of Cattle and Cane with some help from Karma County

You can also check out some more Jimmy Little at the Friday on my Mind blog here.

Dave !

the Dave Graney show - Between Times
This next clip also has Adele Pickvance on bass geetar. It is also from the Recovery show only a few weeks prior to the F.o.C. clip. The guitarist Stuart Perera still performs with Dave as a part of the "Lurid Yellow Mist" - check out http://www.thedavegraneyshow.com/main.htm for tons more info.

Recently Dave did some shows with The Fall throughout australia, with a different line up in each town.
The Sydney show featured Dave with Adele and Gregg Thorsby and can be found over at cranking amps blog here with all of the Oz/NZ Fall gigs - I keep getting mental pictures of Mr cranking on a tour bus trying to win the wet t-shirt contest.. :/

F.o.C. !

A couple of vids to pass the time...
This first one is from the Recovery show 7th November 1998 from one of Rage's retro specials last year.
F.o.C. of course is The Far Out Corporation featuring a few Brissy folk you might be able to recognise ....
"Don't Blame the Beam" was the only single I remember getting any air play from that cd...  This live version is good stuff. A previous post here on SSS gives a more detailed back story.
