The Models , Up Late GOMA 25-08-17

The Models were one of my favorite bands of the
Australian 1980's indy scene. I saw them a few times
back in the day, they supported David Bowie on the
seroius moonlight tour but didnt became really popular
until after James joined.
I preferred the early Models which isnt to say I wasnt a
James Freud fan cause I was, but theres something  about
Sean Kelly's vocal I love.
Anyway it was a fab gig, right up the front at the feet of
the great Mark Ferry I was able to get some great shots
But I was fairly deaf after it all
These guys still have it!
And what a fabulous venue is the gallery of model art,
holding its Marvel exhibition, for this band

Mark Ferrie - Actual Reality

 Mark Ferrie is Australia Music royalty, he has a long and expansive
career and has contributed a lot to this blog!
 Bass player for the Models, Sacred Cowboys,
The Slaughtermen, The Mercurials and the RocK­wiz Orkestra.
He toured and recorded with both Steven Cummings and Andrew
Pendlebury in their post Sports days
He has somehow managed to squeeze in this debut solo album and
later a second one called Nuts and Bolts,
which I would love a copy of!
Its brilliant stuff, Mark sounds like Lou Reed but don't take my word
for it have a look at the video and grab this rare and wonderful
album.

Sacred Cowboys - Nothing Grows In Texas BW Is Nothing Sacred

"this is the worst group I've seen in five years" - Molly Meldrum

Unlike Molly I love the Sacred Cowboys, it is said Gary Gray
and Mark Ferrie thought of the name after watching
"The Groovy Guru", an episode of the classic TV comedy
series Get Smart. In it, the Groovy Guru and his rock band,
the Sacred Cows, use psychedelic music to control the
minds of young people.

Models playing Melborne.

Big news for you lucky folk in Melborne, Mark Ferrie has
left this comment on the "Uk version of Local and or General"
post. Thanks for the heads up Mark.

This version of the Models (Sean Kelly, Andrew Duffield,
Mark Ferrie) with Barton Price on drums will be playing
at the Espy in Melbourne on Fri Aug 6 and the Oxford Arts
factory in Sydney on Tues Aug 10.

The Mercurials - The Mercurials

As we saw in the last post the first time Mark Ferrie and
Andrew Pendelbury plated together was in 1976 at the
Station Hotel. Thus begun a long history of working together,
The Mercurials is the latest in a long line of projects.
In 2003 Mark met Adi Sappir busking in the subway at
Flinders St Station. Adi had arrived in Melbourne from
Israel 18 months earlier. The Mercurials was born out
of this chance meeting, in 2004 the band started recording
tracks which would become their debut CD.
It was released in 2005.
They have released 3 CDs, the latest last year.

This is a brillant debut, beautiful, original, special.
Very talented musicians doing what they want to do.
Mark says not a lot of people get what they are doing,
but those who do make it all worth while.
Like the song they cover here,
Nick Drake's "Time has told me",
this is music from the soul and for the soul.

We were still trying things out and working out how
to combine different elements.

This is a live recording from 1976 of various Melbourne groups
performing at the Station Hotel, Prahran. It originally came out
on the Lamington label and was produced by Keith Glass
(of Missing Link fame). The Station was the original inner city
rock pub venue in Melbourne, spawning a tradition that lasts
till this day (although certain new government legislation
is threatening to kill off this part of the city's culture vis.
the recent closing of the Tote).
This record also documents the first time Andrew Pendlebury
and I actually played together.
