Go-Betweens Live 1982-83, radio broadcasts

Steve aka duckdogtwo has with outstanding generosity shared
with us these two excellent Go-Betweens live radio
broadcasts from 1982 and 1983.
These are excellent quality, balanced soundboards from an
excellent period of Gobs history, back when they were
still a 3 piece.
They also come with artwork which is always good.
I'm listening to this stuff now and its really very
good, it reminds me of the band I saw for the first
time, which was around the same time as these
recordings, quite unlike anything else I'd ever
heard and I suppose its true to say that never
changed.
Don't forget to thank Steve for his outstanding
generosity in the comments.

Hi,

Great recording, wonderful.

Just wondering what the 14th track on the Mosman download is? It's not from the live show, don't recognise it.

Thanks!

Oop, think I've worked it out.

'Stop Before You Say It', the reverse to 'I Need Two Heads' Single?

Great to hear from another Bobby and thanks for both finding and solving that mystery
Glad you enjoyed the recording

Really enjoying how your blog is going. This one's a real treat. I always seem to see early Go-Betweens written off in print as if it was mere juvenilia, but that wilful awkwardness is part of what makes it unique. And there's never been a 3 piece band that wasn't cool. Nope. Not ever.

Thanks Graham , your comment on the 3 piece band is an interesting point of course when I think 3 piece its the Jam that spring to mind.
The early and for that matter later Gobs were a unusual combination of influences as diverse as The Monkeys to The Velvet Underground a true mix of pop and art.

Howdy, thanks so much for all the rare Go-Betweens music you've shared in the past. I noticed that link for Steve's boots are down. I'm hoping they'll be working again soon. : )

Still thinking about three piece bands. There aren't all that many of them: the rockin' Elvis with Scotty and Bill, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, the classic lineup of The Clean, Nirvana ... to my way of thinking there aren't many bad three piece bands.

Come to think of it, I seem to have a vague memory of seeing The Laughing Clowns live circa 1984 as a three piece. Is that possible? I think it was Ed, Jeff and Louise. Maybe they'd just fired some people and it was an emergency solution. I'm wondering if I might have the memory mixed up with the support band. If it really happened (and I guess That Striped Sunlight Sound is the place to ask this) has anyone has got tapes?

Graham that is so funny,
"Maybe they'd just fired some people"
knowing a little of the strong personalities that were the
clowns in 1983.
Cira 1984 clowns is just after Peter Walsh left to reform the apartments, its possible but that would mean no bass and I have some trouble imagining them without bass, unless Ed dropped guitar for bass I suppose.
So do you remember what Ed played and was there a bass??

I remember being surprised that there were only three of them this time, but not too surprised ... I saw them a dozen or so times and I think it was a different line-up each time. You're right, they're hard to imagine without a bass but I don't think there was one and they managed.

If it happened, that is.

I should probably stop reminiscing about things I might have dreamed 25 years ago, after eating tainted dim-sims.

I forgot three piece band X (the Australian one).

great blog bob :) im raiding yer old posts as im a newbie to this blog and sadly coming across some dead links :( the second show here is dead and looks like a must have chance of a new link ?

Hi Mr Anonymous, don't stay that way,
look to here who and where all the readers are from.
I can't believe the mossman link is still alive, don't know how that happened, all zshare links disappeared a couple of weeks ago when they upgraded servers or something. I will upload the missing show.

my first and only go-be live experience? easts leagues club at the stoned cnr.. not quiet the money machine it is now, but a zzz live venue location for special events in the 80's. id been a fan for a few years and they played a great gig, had xero for support if memory serves well.. a very polished stage show. i was to see them on the rem tour in 88 or 89 but showed up late,, a very disappointing start to that gig for me. after that i never got orgainized to see the go-be mk2 play, i had friends who went and told me they are great.. the dvd they put out is fantastic. Strange how u expect ppl to live forever and getting around to see a band is easily put off for me.. i was chatting about the go-be's to a friend the night grant passed away b4 we saw adrian belew play at paddington.. i was sadden to find the next day that this man and his fine band was going to be no longer.... thankfully recordings exist and the fans keep circulating them to remember good ppl and good music.

Hi Chuck, I saw thee Gobs twice at Easts, once as they were touring to promote "Before Hollywood", it was the only time I saw them as a 3 piece, fantastic gig I hadn't been a fan all that long. The 2nd was the famous gig that was videoed for the Rock Arena "Brisbane Bands" special that was much later, around Tallulah I think. Fantastic night again.
I know what you mean about missing out however I had the chance to see the last show they did here a Brisy and passed it up cause I'd seen them a few months earlier.
I hope leonard cohen makes it to feb so i can finally see him play, couldn't pass that one up even at $200 at ticket.
ciao bob

Oh Chuck, glad to have another fellow Brisy person here, I'd love to hear the behind the banana curtain

Any contributions will be gratefully accepted, quite a few wonderful readers have contributed loads
