Summerhaze - Summerhaze

Many thanks to fellow blogger Pilgrim Jake who shares this
wonderful and rare recording with us, made my day.
The first (self titled) album of the band Summerhaze was
released on Larrikin records in 1987 in Australia.
Largely the work of Cathie O’sullivan, its front woman,
its quite an unusual album. Her voice is clear, high
and striking and is accompanied by her on harp on at
least some traditional songs folk songs (eg cruel sister)
with the other band members on percussion, strings and a sax.
The sound falls somewhere between folk,folk-rock classical
and elements of jazz. Many of the songs are written by Cathie.
There is even a hint of psych-folk in some songs.
Unknown to Pilgrim Jake I saw Cathie O’sullivan play solo
one beautiful night, under the stars, at was possibily the 3rd
Maleny Folk Festival. Just Cathie, her harp and the stars,
truely wonderful. I also have a solo album of hers which
you have spurred me on to digitalizing.
Wonderful music folks download it and thanks again
Pilgrim Jake, do drop in and share you recollection of this.

Hey Mate,

Thanks for putting this up. Dont keep a blog of my own, but yours is a mighty fine resource. I got to here this first hand on ABC fm, as I was finishing my year 12 back in the 80's First time i found folk and world (along with Sirocco who are still going) Opened my eyes to whole new vistas of music, to which i still travel to today.

I have the second album, which i'll send to you, when I upload the full thing (have an abridged folk only one at the moment) I also have a few other Oz rarities from Melbourne people might like. Early Underground Lovers and a wonderful Melbourne band - The Ergot Derivative. Who played throughout the 90's.

Thanks mate.

No thank you mate, I'd love to hear that 2nd album and anything else you think would be good. I too started my lean toward folk/world music back in the 80's. I have a couple more Sirocco albums to post, they were always fantastic to see. I'm guessing your from Melbourne, I can't say I know much of the folk scene down south apart from the port fairy festival.
Anyway contribute away and don't forget your stories are as important as the music.

So youve been to a few Maleny woodford festivals?
Fantastic time, Malenys is a great place to live my parents lived there for 10 Years.
No belgians in my family, I suspect they just have good taste in music.

The Ergot derivative are one of those great lost Melb bands. I have a 'Best of' I'll put up for you as a good sample for people.

PS - Am having trouble with bushwackers 'Faces in the street' dload :( I have the vinyl, but its a bit scratchy....

Sirrocco was/is fantastic. i dont know if they are still playing much at the moment. Saw them when I was in high scool on a music excursion and was blown away. Still love them.. Would have been great to have been at their millenium gig . At the wurrumbungles I think...

Bob,

I have most all of the Sirocco recordings (in both CD and Vinyl even) Thought they could be got from the band - but perhaps not.
http://www.siroccoz.com/s_albums.htm for the band.

If ya think there are some that can't be bought from them, then i'll post up my others. All mighty fine.

Hi Jake, No that's fine I have their 3 best albums, I don't know if there's any out of print ones I don't know about. Hope you found the bushwackers album, I do have more from them I plan on posting some day.
The reference to the sirocco post was pointing to the most amazing concert I saw them at when the power went out. Read about it here

Hi, Bob,
Many thx for the THTM link, but no luck there either.
Ah well, one day it may surface....
Will check periodically with your blog in case you manage to find it again yourself.
Cheers.
