Laughing Clowns - Cockatoo Island, Sydney ATP, 17-01- 2009

Finally patience has won and the first of the two Sydney shows
is here. This is a great recording,by all accounts a great
performance, only too short.
Same songs as all the gigs and Ed seems jubilant.
By the look of the photos Ed used the same amp set
up for the Clowns as for the Saints, which was on two
bands later. So an hour and a half break and he was back
again with his old high school band.
Hes a hard working rock star Ed.
So I'm looking for your first hand accounts of this
fabulous gig, please tell us all in the comments.
All thanks to the taper crankingamps who has done
a superb job again.

Make sure you check out Michaela's fantastic review
of this performance in the comments.
Here's a little of what she has to say.

It was all too brief, and so much to take in.
Jeff is always riveting, Louise was something
out of this
world, and Ed...
I can sit and watch Ed’s sexy guitar playing

all day long. I’m fascinated by the way his conveys
such
intensity and such elegant looseness
at the same time.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

I got a pretty good possie to see them, up the front against the barrier and in line with Louise Elliott, and watched them soundcheck. There seemed to be problems with Ed’s mic and much frowning and scurrying to and fro of various people which went on for some time. I thought if it went on much longer Ed might pop a gasket, but of course it was sorted eventually. I gather from something he said at the end that a problem with the drums had eaten into soundcheck time.

When it was fixed they began without fanfare. It took a few goes for the sound balance to be sorted out. Louise’s marvellous sax was getting a bit lost at the beginning. If you listen to the download you can hear someone shout “Turn Louise up!” Ed agreed and got a chant going, and was amused when someone shouted “Turn it ALL up!”

It was all too brief, and so much to take in. Jeff is always rivetting, Louise was something out of this world, and Ed... I can sit and watch Ed’s sexy guitar playing all day long. I’m fascinated by the way his conveys such intensity and such elegant looseness at the same time.

Highlights for me were Theme from “Mad Flies, Mad Flies” and the wonderfully malevolent Collapse Board. But above all it was the finale, Eternally Yours, that did my head in. Ed had much fun between song making cracks about the air of sprituality at the festival, but Eternally Your practically had me popping out of my body, with that sexy, bassy new groove of the recent versions with Louise’s sax searing through it. That one song was worth the price of admission and the travel from Canberra to Sydney ALONE. It was an experience to be treasured.
