There's one more ATP Saints performance I haven't found and
may not, which is the Sunday Sydney performance. This is the
Saturday night one and its a great set, all of the truely great
original Saints songs, I would have liked this set in Brisbane.
Missing the show stopping Nights in Venice however which
we did get.
So this may be the end of the ATP shows now,
All thanks to the taper crankingamps who has done
a superb job yet again.

the last of the clowns recent reunion shows. By some accounts
a better show than the day before and this time a complete
recording. The same songs as the earlier shows and the same
45 min set. And of course the same brilliance that is the
Laughing Clowns

Spiritualized - ATP Brisbane 15-01-09
Here we are getting to the end of Chucks fantastic series,
only one to go. The last two aren't Australian of course
but rules are meant to be broken.
This is a great recording of an excellent performance.
I was really looking forward to seeing these guys and
they didn't disappoint. Like some kind of odd gospel
bank they fitted in when with the late afternoon vibe
before unleashing one of the best walls of sound I've
heard. With Jason Pierce reminding me more of
Peter Perrett than anyone else and some delicious
Guitar work they make for an enjoyable experience.
Guess I'm a convert. Thanks to Chuck again for his
generosity.

Laughing Clowns - Cockatoo Island, Sydney ATP, 17-01- 2009
Finally patience has won and the first of the two Sydney shows
is here. This is a great recording,by all accounts a great
performance, only too short.
Same songs as all the gigs and Ed seems jubilant.
By the look of the photos Ed used the same amp set
up for the Clowns as for the Saints, which was on two
bands later. So an hour and a half break and he was back
again with his old high school band.
Hes a hard working rock star Ed.
So I'm looking for your first hand accounts of this
fabulous gig, please tell us all in the comments.
All thanks to the taper crankingamps who has done
a superb job again.
Make sure you check out Michaela's fantastic review
of this performance in the comments.
Here's a little of what she has to say.
It was all too brief, and so much to take in.
Jeff is always riveting, Louise was something
out of this world, and Ed...
I can sit and watch Ed’s sexy guitar playing
all day long. I’m fascinated by the way his conveys
such intensity and such elegant looseness
at the same time.
I couldn't have said it better myself.

The Necks - ATP Brisbane15-01-09

We are getting toward the end of the 6 Volume set of the
Brisbane 2009 All Tomorrows Parties.
This time we have a sublime performance from the necks.
I am very happy to hear this since I missed the first 2 acts.
One of my bands to see is the necks, they are unparalleled
anywhere in the world and as so are at the forefront of
Australian innovative music. A single meandering track
highlighting Chris Abrahams genius and indeed the entire
band, this is my kind of music, pure improvisation.
Of course this is a wonderful recording, the crowd are not
at their later raucous levels or numbers and its easy to listen
to this and be transported back to the bright summers
afternoon when it was played.
Kind of an odd band perhaps for a bright sunny day but I'm
sure they pulled it off. Many thanks again to Brisbane greatest
audio historian Chuck.
Now off to bed for me for tomorrow night I see Leonard Cohen.

The Saints - ATP, Brisbane, 15-01-09
And here it is volume 5 in all its glory, the Saints
most controversial performance of the tour.
Well first I think Chuck has done an awesome
job in cleaning up this recording, its really
completely listenable and the crowd chat
isn't that bad, I've heard much worse.
The band plays a short set, not playing
the entire album as advertised.
I'd love to know what happened there
and missing the signature tune I'm Stranded,
which apparently they planed as an encore,
but because they took too long returning to
stage the pressed for time soundcrew moved
their gear off stage to start the massive
set up for nicks band.
And so we missed out.
All the same short and sweet.
Thanks again to Chuck for all his hard work
and dedication to the cause.

Laughing Clowns - ATP Mt Buller10-01-09

.. the reformed Laughing Clowns turn in an enrapturing
performance of their jazz-affected post-punk and
conclude with the towering saxophone melody
and festival highlight of Eternally Yours. -

LAST -FM review of ATP, Mt.Buller
A very nice recording of the Laughing Clowns first show of
their reunion tour as part of the ATP line up.
The same songs as done in Brisbane, without the encore.
Special thanks to the taper crankingamps.

Mick Harvey Leaves Bad Seeds
News that hit this afternoon, Mick Harvey has left
The Bad Seeds after 25 years.
So the Brisbane ATP gig was the 3rd last time mick
was to play with the Bad Seeds, Cockatoo island next
and the Belvior Amphitheatre in Perth on the 20th
his last gig. Makes ATP even more special.
Here's the press release.
For a variety of personal and professional reasons
I have chosen to discontinue my ongoing involvement
with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.
After 25 years I feel I am leaving the band as it
experiences one of its many peaks; in very healthy
condition, and with fantastic prospects for the future.
I’m confident Nick will continue to be a creative force
and that this is the right time to pass on my artistic
and managerial role to what has become a tremendous
group of people who can support him in his endeavours
both musically and organizationally.
It was a fantastic experience to finish my touring days
in the band with the recent shows in Australia
and the unique events that took place in conjunction
with All Tomorrow’s Parties, especially Mt. Buller,
which was one of the many highlights of my involvement
with the band throughout the years.
I shall continue working on the Bad Seeds back catalogue
re-issues project over the coming year and look forward
to the new opportunities I shall be able to accommodate
as a result of my changed circumstances.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - ATP Brisbane 15-01-09

Listen to this one loud, that's Chucks advice and good advice too.
What can I say Chuck has rushed this wonderful recording
of what was an amazing Nick and the seeds performance.
I've seen Nick with the seeds some 3 or 4 times and this is my
favorite time. Its an action packed night folks so get downloading
and turn up the volume.
Thanks again Chuck for all the hard work and this brilliant

The Saints - At Brisbane, From School To I'm Stranded
Annie over at Meltingpod has put together this podcast
which sounds great, I'm downloading as I type.
So get along and have a look at Meltingpod
there is also reports from the various ATP gigs
around the country and also photos including
Laughing Clowns shots.
Here's what Annie has to say about the pod.
After the All Tomorrow’s parties festival where The Saints
reunited for a few shows with the original members
Chris Bailey, Ed Kuepper and Ivor Hay,
I thought it was the good time to publish at least this old
interview I recorded with Ed Kuepper in August 2007 !!
In this first part we started when Ed met Chris and Ivor
at school in the first years of 1970 until the Saints left
Brisbane for London with their first album self-produced
in 76 “I'm Stranded”.
In the second part : the Saints at London !
The Saints - Mt Buller, Victoria All Tomorrows Parties 09-01-2009
A fine audience recording of the Saints performing at
Mt Buller for the All Tomorrows Parties weekend.
Complete with a horn section they play all the best
songs from the bands so sadly short career.
Unfortunately the taper crankingamps,
to whom I'm eternally grateful,
had his batteries go flat just after the
encore song began, so we miss it.
A wonderful and much longer performance
than at Brisbane, with a few songs they
missed up here. Includes a never before
heard saints cover of All Tomorrows Parties.
Richard Sharmans wonderful and might I
add professional photos can be found here
Some more pro shots are here,
They are the work of NerdBurger a lovely
fellow from over at the Ausrock forums.

Robert Forster - ATP 15-01-09 Brisbane

Another Striped Sunlight exclusive, Chuck who recorded
all 6 acts at the Thursday, Brisbane All Tomorrows parties,
has been burning the midnight oil to rush off the press
this fantastic recording.
Not only is this a bloody fine recording, its a wonderful
performance from one Brisbane's finest, on what was
a beautiful summers afternoon in Brisbane city.
Rob starts proceedings 5 minutes early just to squeeze
another song in. He is joined on stage by his band, the
same who just finished a world tour last year and
everyone's enjoying themselves.
Its a short but action packed set jam packed with
favorites, drawing from all parts of his exceptional
career.
Like Chuck I'm looking forward to the entire 6 cd
set of this gig as the recordings make there way
through the various complicated processes.
Many thanks to Chuck who is a most generous
fellow indeed.

Messing With The Kid - Saints
Another Striped Sunlight exclusive.
A video of the Saints performing
Messing with the Kid at the Brisbane
All Tomorrows Parties gig.
Bear in mind I was right at the front
which is good for the action and not
so good for the sound. I picked a ballad
to record so I'd keep the distortion
down, however when picks up it
distorts a bit.
This video shows the band firing on
all cylinders and Chris putting on a
fine vocal performance. You also get
to see how Ed works in a band when
he has no vocal work to do.
He was hard to get photos of as he
never stays still.
Annie from Meltingpod has compiled
reports and photos from various
sources including here, on both
the Saints and the Laughing Clowns
performances.
With Clowns photos at last.

All Tomorrows Parties, Brisbane, 15-01-09.

With posters like those above how could I not witness the
fantastic lineup put together by Nick and his Seeds.
And what a line up, we got a decidedly smaller version
up here however I don't mind cause the clowns are still
to come and everyone I want to see otherwise was on
the bill. So on to the gig.
Its was a Thursday afternoon / evening show which
is a pain to get to so we arrived with about 4 songs
left of Robert Forster and band missing the first 2 acts.
I could hear him as we walked the Km or so through
the botanical gardens to the riverside stage.
Pandanus was playing as an excellent Brisbane backdrop.
Rob and co were brilliant as usual and I even got a few
photos of him looking out from back stage later.
Rob Forster

Spiritualized were next and they didn't disappoint,
not Australian I know, but an amazing wall of sound.
Complete with a couple of female backing singers,
it took on a gospel sound which made them an
unsurprising choice for the bad seeds. Very nice
band to watch as the sun set on what was a perfect
Brisbane day.
Jason Pierce
Spiritualized
We moved up front stage for the rest of the night,
the Saints up next. Now I make no secret that this
was the biggest reason for me being here.
I watched the rather simple set up for the
band and Ed personal come out to check out
his Quad marshal amps, Vg 8, strat set up,
much to the crowds enjoyment.
Eds Strat
Setting up before show
Billed as the Saints playing the entire
"I'm Stranded" album in the end that didn't
exactly happen. They was in fine form however,
I think I preferred the pig city performance, it
had a more historic feel to it, however it was
bloody good. Chris and Ed seemed totally at
ease, I don't believe all this animosity crap.

Ed let it rip with his legendary guitar sound.
While Chris had the crowd eating out of his hand.
He was well behaved too, seemed to be really
enjoying himself. Ivor Hay on drums and
Archie Larizza on bass complete the line up
as an invincible percussion section.
Ed and Ivor

There was plenty tracks from Stranded and
a few others with some notable omissions.
The set list was
Swing for the crime
This perfect day
Erotic neurotic
A minor aversion
Kissin cousins
One way street
Messin' with the kid
Nights in venice
Chris and Archie

They didn't play I'm Stranded
The Prisoner or Know your Product,
which is guaranteed to piss off many punters.
A point made by Andrew in his review here
but to deny a Brisbane crowd a song with which
they identified so strongly is absolutely unforgivable.
They leave the stage post-_Venice_ and it takes
a few moments to realise that there’ll be no encore.
Their set seemed to be cut short however the
whole thing was running late.
Andy a reader here has this inside information
on what happened
Was working with The Saints on this tour - the stuff
up in Bris with Stranded was because the band took
a bit long before returning to do an encore
(which was to be Stranded) and the sound crew had
started knocking the PA down...
the guys had every intention of playing it.
So they took too long smoking cigs backstage.
Chuck has recorded, he had some troubles
with the saints, but has an excellent recording
of Robert Forster and says
at this stage I'm prepared for 6 volume entire
festival collection to represent this fine day :)
I have obtained a recording of the
band at Mt Buller which I will post soon.
Eds wonderful shoes
Next the Bad Seeds in all there glory and I'm
right at the front.
With 2 drum kits, extra lights and a 7 piece band
it took a bit to set up and they were scrambling.
From the moment they hit the stage it was
like the wildest wild you could go on. This is
one of the greatest bands in the world, they
are all the highest quality musicians and
nick runs a tight ship.
Thomas Wydler

Martyn Paul Casey
Conway Savage
Jim Sclavunos

Warren Ellis who as Chuck emailed about by the time I got home,
"shits all over Hendrix for sonic genius... "
Warren Ellis

Was incredible, these days he plays apart
from violin, these little 4 string electric
guitars and I think hes taken over the
Blixa mantle, something I never believed
possible.
Mick Harvey

They ripped through their rather large
back catalog playing songs like Dig, Lazarus,
Dig, Tupelo, The Weeping Song, Red Right Hand
Love Letter, The Mercy Seat, Deanna, Papa Won't
Leave You Henry, More News From Nowhere,
The Ship Song, Get Ready For Love, Red Right Hand,
Lyre Of Orpheus and of course Stagger Lee to finish.

What an incredible band and what an incredible
in your face performance,
at least from where I was and what an incredible
night. I've culled the photos from almost 900
(there was a lot of blurry ones) to some 50.
And Chuck has a recording for us.
just listening to nick cave dat :)
sounds nice ill be busy tomorrow
but will spend a few days from weekend
on sweetening these tapes for the stripey sound :)

Any one else who saw any of the performances
please let us know in the comments what it was like.
And if the photos make you insanely jealous let me
know too. If your interested there's additional photos
on my myspace photo section
