Wildlife Documentaries EP - The SSS blogs monumental 500th Post

Well loyal readers of the SSS blog we have made the very special
milestone of our 500th post.
When I started this blog back on Australia Day 2008 I never guessed
what a wonderful time it would be. Coming up to 3 years at the end
of next January I think Myself and Chuck shall have to think up an
great post for that!

This EP is a very special record I've kept up my sleeve for a special
occasion. Wildlife Documentaries was formed in the early 80s after
the original Saints split.
Ed Kuepper and Ivor Hay returned to Australia,
Hay joined The Hitmen, and Kuepper formed Laughing Clowns.
Chris Bailey remained in the UK and set about assembling a
new version of The Saints that initially included Hay on drums
(who returned to the UK briefly).

After that, Hay formed this jazz-inspired combo
Wildlife Documentaries back in Sydney.
Described as a "steel skeleton with a heart of brass"
they released this ep on M squared in June 1982.
And that was it, shame really because this band had a
wonderful sound very much in the same vein as the
Laughing Clowns.
After the end of this band Ivor rejoined Bailey in The Saints
during 1985.

Howard Cairns has continued working is music and after 25 years
has recently put out a record read all about it Here

Wildlife Documentaries are

Ivor Hay - Drums and Vocals
Howard Cairns - Guitar and Vocals
Mark Spence - Bass
Michael Charles - Alto Sax

Also playing on this record

Louise Elliot - Tenor Sax
and Greg Thorne - Trumpet

Track List

Holus Bolus - Cassette

One of my favourite contributors to the SSS blog, Steve aka
Duckdogtwo, has sent me this fantastic, rare, cassette
complete with art. Another one of these cassette music
"Casszines" which has some great tracks and interviews.
Steve has spilt all the tracks, making some 40 in all.
Great casszine, a lot of work went into this.
Most exciting is the Tangled Shoelace's stuff and
by some coincidence an interview with Mitch Jones,
M2 founder who I know has been reading this blog.
Thank You Steve for this wonderful Cassette that now
enters the digital age.

Growing pains - various m squared bands

"... Experimental music is fine by me, but once you go into the
studio and start cutting the marketable product,
surely you need to have your musical strategies organised
and understood." - Roadrunner November 1980

This starts a trend at M Squared for releasing compilations of
wide ranging sounds and ideas from various bands and hybrids.
You can't please all the people all the time.
Contains the track that gave the name to The Makers of the
Dead Travel Fast and an off the wall Stones cover from those
northern beaches' favourites The Barons.
Some record stores objected to the cover image.

The Systematics - My Life in the Field of Cows EP

Not much info on this fabulous Sydney post punk band,
Started by Patrick Gibson in his bedroom in Balgowlah
in Sydney's northern beaches, where he recorded the
infamous Pulp Baby. Later joined by Micheal Filewood
and Fiona Graham. Patrick also was a member of
Ya Ya Choral, Scattered Order, Loop Orchestra and
No Night Sweats. I would have loved to have heard
this stuff when it was released, this 1981 Ep came
out not so long after PIL's Metal Box Double album.
Which was and still is one of my favorite records and
my fav post punk band then was (still is) Joy Division
and just about the biggest thing here in Brisbane,
as far as musso friends went was the Birthday Party.

Track list
01 - international voltage
02 - bovine
03 - fat cows go down an eastern beach
04 - bbd

Xero - Lust In The Dust

Xero in 1982 moved to Sydney signing with the
M squared record label. This 12" recorded in
Brisbane was a groundbreaking and very
hip at the time record, it remains a classic.
Many Thanks to Basking Shark who provides us
with the fantastic cover scans and a nearly 9 min
Fast Forward Interview with Xero
(including tracks Girls, 24D Pelaco & Strangers,
Immigrants And Bandits)
As a special note John Willsteed created much of
the artwork on music releases (this included) and
hand-bills used to promote gigs, some of this was
exhibited as part of the Brisbane sound exhibition
earlier this year.

The lineup on the Ep was
Irena Luckus: vocals, Roland Jupiter 8 synth,
guitar
John-e Willsteed:vocals, keyboard, guitar, bass
Tony Childs: bass

Tangled Shoelaces - 4 Track EP

While I'm in a Brisbane bands type mood, here is a gem from 1984,
the Tangled Shoelaces Ep.
Tangled Shoelaces were a band of quite young and very hip guys
and girls who played quite a bit back in the early 80's.
They later became "Wonderous Fair" and appear on the 4zzz
"State of Emergence" album. This EP was released on the
M squared label and their only release. Wonderful ,whimsical
and eccentric, a great example on the Brisbane Sound.
I'm afraid I can't find any more info about these guys,
so if anybody has anything to add please do so in the comments.
