Seven Ballerinas - Studio Recordings 1981 to 1991
Formed in 1981 on the Gold Coast the Seven Ballerinas were an
influential and important contributor to the alternative rock music
scene here in Brisbane just an hours drive north from the Gold Coast
and later in Sydney.
Formed from the ashes to two pre-existing bands The Strand
and Ratpack they achieved greater recognition, but for reasons
I don't understand never made it much bigger
Through the fantastic efforts of Michael Palmer we finely have the studio
album we never got. I know if an album had of been recorded back in
the mid 80's it would have been a lot different, but this is an excellent
documentation of what was an excellent band.
This band as well as Ratpack and The Strand have been well covered
by this blog, you can find these posts Here
There's also a wikipedia entry Here
And Michael's You Tube collection of videos of these bands Here
Now over to Michael for a bit about the Album!
Thanks Michael!
14 tracks in all.
Was many more but the quality of the source material
which is mostly cassette was crappy.
The quality on some of these varies but I hope my remastering
abilities are improving.
Track 1 and 2 is the self produced single recorded
in Sydney in 81.
Track 3 to 7 are demos recorded by record companies
in Sydney between 82 and 83.
Track 4. Falling Tear was to be our first single.
Track 3 Fools Parade and Track 4 Falling Tear were mixed by Mike Stavrou
who had mixed Brass In Pocket for The Pretenders
and also worked with Siouxsie and the Banshees.
Tracks 8 to 13 were recorded in 1987
in Sydney in a “live” studio environment.
and track 14 is a rerecording of
Sometimes I Feel done in 1991.
All the best
Michael

A Sad Day
The former lead singer of Yothu Yindi has died aged 56
at his homein the Northern Territory.
Mr Yunupingu, who is a former Australian of the Year,
died overnight at his home in Yirrkala in Eastern Arnhem Land.
He had been ill with kidney disease for several years
He became the lead singer in Yothu Yindi, which was formed in 1986,
a group which created a blend of rock and traditional Aboriginal music.
It became so popular Mr Yunupingu had to give up his teaching job.
Mr Yunupingu was the first Aboriginal person from Arnhem Land to
gain a university degree, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree
in education from Deakin University in 1988.
In 1989 he became assistant principal of the Yirrkala Community School.
In 1990 he took over as principal of that school,
becoming the first Aboriginal principal in Australia.
He held this position until late 1991,
leaving to pursue his career with Yothu Yindi.
He always said he believed that life should be balanced
and in harmony and that his mother taught him important
Aboriginal ideas about how to live with people and with nature.
His name, Yunupingu, means rock - rock that stands against time.
Reference to his first name has been removed for cultural reasons.

Opening Night - My Country , I Still Call Australia Home: Contemporary Art from Black Australia 01/06/13 Goma, Brisbane
To celebrate the opening of My Country , I Still Call Australia Home:
Contemporary Art from Black Australia, Goma put on a "Up Late,
one night only" last night.
Archie Roach and Medics, joined by Bunna Lawrie entertained and
there was plenty of excellent art to check out.
I videoed 4 songs from Archie, I missed the very apt Native Born,
which is his song about the great Indigenous artist Albert Namatjira.
There was a few songs from the new album and I got them as well
as A Child Was Born Here from his 2000 Looking for Butter Boy
album. He also performed one of Ruby's children's songs.
The Medics were next, a bit of a change of pace.
These guys came from Cairns originally, now based in Brisbane.
They have since formiong in 2007 released two EP's and an album,
won jjj,s unearthed and a deadly award for best band in 2010.
In 2012 Rolling Stone crowned them best new talent
Their lead singer Jhindu Lawieis the son of Bunna Lawie the lead
singer of legendary trailblazing Indigenous band Coloured Stone.
Bunna joined them on stage for the last two songs including a
fantastic version of Black Boy.
As much as I enjoyed the Medics alternate indigenous sound
I would have liked to see a lot more of Bunna, maybe one day.
The art Exhibition is fantastic too, so if you get a chance get along.
You shall find all the videos of the night at the end of this post
so check them out too!
You can check out the Medics web site Here

Every so often 4ZzZ put on a free gig in the car park of the stations
inner city grounds. Its not a big car park so it has a kind of
house party atmosphere which is nice
Today's gig was the Kick out the Jams gig, I caught the last 4 bands,
there was 6 all up and I really went there see to one of my favorite
Brisbane bands of the moment, the Flangipanis.
First band up was Citizen John (above) who put on a mighty fine set
check em out here
Then a nice and heavy set from Smoke check em out here
Followed by some loud and dirty blues from Deadweight Express
And then the moment we all had been waiting for
The Flangipanis!
Damn fine set from the guys if you haven't heard these
guys then get along to their bandcamp site and have a listen
Their new album comes out in a couple of weeks
and I believe you can download their last album for free

Atomic Beat Squad - Hurt b/w Hands Of Love 7"

Dennis, who is putting together a Brisbane electronic music
project at the moment has sent us this rare gem.
A 7" single from the Atomic Beat Squad released back in
1990 on Sundown records
Let me hand over to Dennis
And thank you Dennis for this fine post!
This is the Hurt 7" released by Atomic Beat Squad (ABS - formerly
Tainted Violets) in 1990 on the Sundown label.
The blurb from the Time Off band guide of 1988 for Tainted Violets reads:
"Synth band with Bauhaus and Ultravox influences. Finalists in this
year's Rock Awards. Come with big wraps."
I seem to remember ABS vying to be signed to a major label at the time.
