The Sports - Don't Throw Stones
Formed in 1976 in Melbourne the Sports towered above so
many bands to become one of the best and fondly remembered
Australian bands from the era.
When Andrew Pendlebury joined in 1977 one of Australian music
most enduring partnerships begun, with both artists helping the
other out on their later brilliant solo projects.
This their brilliant debut Lp was released in early 1979 and became
part of the new wave of music that was called um,
New Wave oddly enough.
The album had 3 singles and the photos here come from my vinyl
copies I picked up recently that included the
Reckless/Mailed it to your Sister 7 "single.
Which I haven't included in this download.
The Sport went on to release other 3 or so EPs
and 3 or so Lps as well as a couple of greatest hits
type compilations.
They split in 1981 and both Stephen and Andrew embarked
on successful solo careers.

Tigerland - Andrew Pendlebury
Andrew Pendlebury is in my opinion Australia's greatest guitarist,
he has had a long and illustrious career some 35 years.
Starting of in the Sports in 1977, one of the best Australian bands
of the era, for some ten years and releasing his first solo album
in 1987. Between the Horizon and the Dockyard was a landmark
album and Tigerland his 2nd solo lp is also wonderful.
In all 5 solo albums, the only one I don't have is "Calling You" -
Regular Records (D 11187) (1992) and I should love to hear from
anyone who has that record.
If you do a bit of poking round here on the SSS blog you will
find all sorts of Andrew Pendlebury goodies,
He joined the Slaughtermen in 1984 with Mark Ferrie and many
other collaborative projects with other people esp with Stephen
Cummings the one time frontman for the sports.
In 1993 he collaborated with Doug De Vries on an album ‘Karate’
and again in 1995 to record Trouble and Desire for ABC Music.
These days he plays with Mark Ferrie and Israeli cellist Adi Sappir,
in the fabulous Mercurials

The Mercurials - The Mercurials

As we saw in the last post the first time Mark Ferrie and
Andrew Pendelbury plated together was in 1976 at the
Station Hotel. Thus begun a long history of working together,
The Mercurials is the latest in a long line of projects.
In 2003 Mark met Adi Sappir busking in the subway at
Flinders St Station. Adi had arrived in Melbourne from
Israel 18 months earlier. The Mercurials was born out
of this chance meeting, in 2004 the band started recording
tracks which would become their debut CD.
It was released in 2005.
They have released 3 CDs, the latest last year.
Find everything Mercurials Here on their website
This is a brillant debut, beautiful, original, special.
Very talented musicians doing what they want to do.
Mark says not a lot of people get what they are doing,
but those who do make it all worth while.
Like the song they cover here,
Nick Drake's "Time has told me",
this is music from the soul and for the soul.
Thanks to Mark who sent me the last copy of this album.
We were still trying things out and working out how
to combine different elements.
Feel free to upload it if you like, we probably won't be
re-pressing it.
(we're already planning our next album)

performing at the Station Hotel, Prahran. It originally came out
on the Lamington label and was produced by Keith Glass
(of Missing Link fame). The Station was the original inner city
rock pub venue in Melbourne, spawning a tradition that lasts
till this day (although certain new government legislation
is threatening to kill off this part of the city's culture vis.
the recent closing of the Tote).
This record also documents the first time Andrew Pendlebury
and I actually played together.

The Mercurials - Silver and Gold
Just in time for Christmas I received a wonderful email
from Australia's greatest bass player Mark Ferrie.
Mark who has played for bands such as diverse as the
Models, the sacred cowboys and most recently the Rockwiz
house band, has had this wonderful project going
with his old mate Andrew Pendlebury who happens
to be Australia's greatest guitarist. They have been going for a
number of years now and have just released their 3rd album.
By the way they both were in the legendary Melbourne band
The Slaughtermen. This time they are both on guitar.
The Album "Silver And Gold" of which they sent me a copy,
is superb, the third member of the group Adi Sappir is a cellist
and vocalist and like their secret weapon she makes this into
something very special.
They describe their music as a sauna for the soul, and
that's a pretty good way to put it. There's so many great songs
on here, I particularly like the cover of the sports tune
"How come", Andrew played in the Sports in case you
didn't know and this is a fab version, gone is the pop song
replaced with a beautiful haunting ballad.
But don't believe me get over to their Myspace site to
have a listen. Find it here
They also have a web site with everything you could
want, music samples, photos, bios and links to
get hold of the music
Find it here
I'm heading off with the family to camp in the Lamington
wilderness for 5 days or so, this album will be on high
rotation at my camp site!
Now here's a bio for everything I missed
The MERCURIALS are a musical trio hailing from
Melbourne, Australia that has been performing since
the start of the 2004.They draw on a number of musical
bases (including blues, folk, rock and classical)
to produce a sound that is a unique
product of the Melbourne musical environment.
The group has been described as a ‘hip chamber group
playing contemporary adult music’.
The group is composed of ARIA award winning guitarist
ANDREW PENDLEBURY,
guitarist/vocalist/songwriter MARK FERRIE
and ADI SAPPIR, an adventurous, young cellist
and vocalist. Each member brings with them a diverse
range of experience and influences to create the
Mercurials sound. Their live repertoire includes original
material in addition to interpretations of tunes by artists
as diverse as Bob Dylan, Irving Berlin, Jimi Hendrix,
Kraftwerk and Neil Young. A feature of the group is the
wondrous vocals of Adi Sappir, who sings in both English
and her native Hebrew. The group came together in late
December of 2003 to perform at the Ian Potter Gallery in
the National Gallery of Victoria at Federation Square and
have since made several appearances on the Derek Guille
Evening program on ABC radio, in addition to the popular
‘Off The Record’ and ‘JVG Radio Method’ programs on 3RRR.
They have also won over audiences at the 2004 Adelaide
Fringe Festival, the Boite World Music Café in North Fitzroy,
the 2006 Port Fairy Folk Festival, the 2006 Mt Beauty Music
Muster and a host of music venues and festivals around
Melbourne and rural Victoria.
The MERCURIALS released their debut self titled CD in June
2005 and launched it to a sell-out audience at Dizzy’s night
club in Richmond in early July.
The combination of Mark and Andrew, who have played
together in various combinations on the Melbourne live
music scene since the mid 70s, and the exotic new dimension
which Adi brings to the mix, has resulted in a unique, magical,
world class musical ensemble with a truly refreshing new sound.

Tims Exclusive Andrew Pendlebury Interview

Fabulous Tim who runs one of the greatest blogs on the net,
found here, has as a stripedsunlight exclusive and knowing
what a fan I am, interviewed the one and only Andrew
Pendlebury. It happens he knows Andrew quiet well and
Tim is a natural interviewer. Move over Molly is what
springs to mind. The icing on the cake however is the
signed record cover which I will have hang on my wall
when I get it. I'm stoked, a fabulous surprise.
I will have to finish digitalizing the said album now
so I can post it.
Andrew talks about many things, including the great news
that the Slaughtermen are playing in Melbourne in Sept.
Here's a few things Tim had to say about the interview.
At the beginning he talks about the Hendrix roadie @ Stiff,
That was DAVE ROBINSON who is still alive but based in
Nashville...when the tape was turned off he said that he had
recently got in touch with Stiff and didn't know that DR was
still alive, Andrew says Robertson...as I say I can help fill in
any stuff. There were a lot of names that I didn't know in the
Oz music scene that maybe you do know...
He relaxed so much more after it was it turned off and we
talked about john Martyn, Nick Drake his land in Greece,
Rembitika (!) music and lots more...sorry it was off.
Thank You Tim

Andrew Pendelbury's last solo album is a very special album,
half instrumental, half guest vocalist, with many great
artists such as Chris Wilson, Deborah Conway, Kate Ceberano,

some of the best this country has to ofter.
Add to that some of Andrews fantastic instrumental work
and you have a memorable album.

Karate - Andrew Pendlebury & Doug de Vries

What a fabulous Cd this is, a little latin, a little jazz
a little bit of everything. Truly this would convert
any disbeliever that Andrew Pendlebury is
a national treasure.
Take two top Melbourne guitarists, with backgrounds
in jazz de Vries and rock Pendlebury, let them loose
on an intriguing array of acoustic standards and
originals from Brazill to New Orleans and Nashville
or as far afield as Soweto and the streets of Forbes.
Although each has played on the other's solo records
and they perform together regularly around town,
this is the first duo recording and it's a beauty.
Backing is by Denis Close on Brazilian hand percussion,
bassist Steve Hadley and drummer Peter Jones.
You will recognise tracks such as the quirky
Crepuscle on the Yarra which featured on the
Moon Over Melbourne collection, Pendlebury's
Catalina or de Vries's Homestead and After The
Carousel from their respective solo albums.
The elegant Egberto Gismonti title number contrasts
with the breakneck Western swing of Stratosphere
Boogie by Jimmy Bryant - a favourite of Pendlebury's -
and they swing to a more refined soul jazz metre in
Oliver Nelson's Hoe-Down trading sneaky licks until
de Vries switches to a down-home banjo.
Among other impressive tracks a spirited arrangement
of the New Orleans Mardi Gras classic Big Chief
(no doubt inspired by the Neville Brothers great
concert rendition), the steady rolling blues of You
Gotta Move, a languorous rendition of k d lang's
Tears of Love's Recall and a superb de Vries original
called Winnie based on South Africa's infectious
township jive.'

Andrew Pendlebury - Zing...Went the Strings

Frequently cited as one of the finest guitarists in the nation,
Andrew Pendlebury has always seemed destined towards a
career in music. From age four he studied violin under the
auspicious direction of Nathan Gutman, and at an early age
played Vivaldi and Bach with the prowess of someone far
beyond his tender years. Andrew is the son of two celebrated
Australian artists, Laurence Scott Pendlebury and Nornie Gude .
It is little wonder that Andrew also possesses a great talent with
the brush, and that his sister Anne was encouraged in her career
as an actress with stage and TV credits. After leaving school
Andrew set about forging a career for himself in the art world.
He held a number of successful exhibitions of his impressionist
style works, but music still held his attention. Exposed to Django
Reinhardt by a friend of his father who was a dance band
guitarist in WW2, and excited by the new sounds evolving from
players like Jimi Hendrix bursting onto the scene,
Andrew began to focus his creative energy into the guitar.
Andrew Pendlebury is a gifted composer and has built a strong
catalogue of works over the years across a broad range of genres
from theater music to blues, classical, country and
contemporary. Ever busy, and continuing upon his journey
of musical discovery, Andrew has undertaken numerous
recording and writing projects over the past few years.
Venturing into composing music for live theatre,
Andrew has scored for many prominent Australian
productions, working with some of the best directors this country
has to offer. Pendlebury finds theater a new and exciting
challenge using his playing to illustrate moods and sentiments
within the story lines he is accompanying, creating the aural
accompaniment which allows the audience to get lost in the
performance of the actors and the intricacies of the script.
His work in this field has bought him many accolades from
the critics and audiences alike.
Like all great players Andrew Pendlebury, even after his
thirty-five years of playing so many styles of music, is excited by
what the future holds and is still invigorated by the sheer desire
and inner passion for music. Like a master artist working on the
great canvas of his career, he is not swayed by fashion or
commerciality. In a world where we love to define music into
categories, Pendlebury has truly created his own unique voice,
he is a man who in his own words says, “There are only two types
of music, good and the other type”. You can rest assured that
Andrew Pendlebury will continue to ensure the survival of the
art form of great music.
From the Sports to Andrew Pendlebury's solo career.
This is fantastic album by one of the greatest guitarists Australia
has ever seen. His 3rd solo album Andrew has released some 5
albums which I own, this one like most of them is purely
instrumental.

The Slaughtermen - Live Naturally
"The Slaughtermen were, and still are, one of the most original
bands ever to see the light of day in Australia."
Mathew W. McPherson, Rolling Stone Australia
Meandering from Steven Cummings via Australia's greatest
guitarist Andrew Pendlebury, we come to the legendary
Slaughtermen. As my late but never less inspired Easter post.
Australian's only post-punk southern gospel group began
in Melbourne in 1984.
The band's first single, "God's Not Dead" b/w
"Jesus Saves White Trash",
was released on the Au Go Go label in 1986.
This was followed with 1987's Still Lovin' You LP on the
Cleopatra Records label,
and 1988's Melbourne, Memphis and the Mansion in the Sky
LP on the Agape label.
Founder members were Ian Stephen (vocals and keyboards),
Mark Ferrie (bass guitar and vocals),
Andrew Pendlebury (lead guitar and vocals),
Terry Doolan (rhythm guitar and vocals),
Des Hefner (drums and vocals).
The Slaughtermen gained a following playing revved up versions of
southern gospel songs and barroom country classics at inner city
rock venues in Sydney and Melbourne between 1985 and 1988.
The band enjoyed a years residency at the Rising Sun Hotel
in Melbourne which built a fairly even following of believers
and skeptics.
Singer Ian Stephen, only added to the mystique and/or confusion
by purchasing a twenty five dollar Reverendship from a religious
organization from out of the back pages of the National Enquirer.
A nationally broadcast hour long live concert on Australia's
ABC TV, cemented their unique place to this day, as Australia's
first and only southern gospel group, albeit twelve thousand miles
from the original source of the inspiration, America's Deep South.
After a lack luster Sydney tour in 1988 the band ceased performing.
In 1995 the Slaughtermen returned to the stage with the original
line-up at a well received one-off concert in Melbourne,
to coincide with the release of a CD Gospel Gold on the Massive label.
This 20 track disc featured live recordings of their gospel material
culled from the Live Naturally album and various sound board
recordings. In 1994, 1997 and 2007, the original members
reformed for one-off concerts in Melbourne, Australia.

Stephen Cummings - Lovetown

"Lovetown will surely get Stephen Cummings to heaven" - Rolling Stone
This 1987 solo release from Stephen Cummings was his 3rd and when
he came into his own. Steven has had a long and brilliant solo career
and yet the big time always eluded him.
This album is a joy, a pop masterpiece, something you have to hear
to believe. Why he isn't acclaimed like say Paul Kelly is beyond me.
She set fire was a track released on one of Andrew Pendlebury's
brilliant solo albums which I shall move on to soon.
A fantastic song about a rather dark subject.
She Set Fire To The House
Steven Cummings/Andrew Pendlebury
I pushed the button
Somebody opened the door
Her name was Monika
And Monika was mine ever more
She said I can't be held responsible
For all the guilt in this world
Seven years is enough for any boy or girl
Chorus:
She set fire to the house
And watched it burn down to the ground
The house was in darkness
Monika made me insist
If you want to stay that's alright
But it's at your own risk
Keep your mouth shut
Keep it bottled up inside your head
Love is disappeared
Love is vanished all hope is dead
Chorus (x2)
Pretty flames
Illuminated the night
Monika's face was snow white
If she was ever unfaithful to me
Well I didn't notice
Especially
There are murders
That aren't murders
And they happen every single day
We break our promises
We find it hard to break away
Only Monika she left first
And in that cold clear dawn light
An empty can of kerosene
Helped that house of love burn down so bright
Chorus (x4)
Watched it burn down to the ground
Tracklist
01. Everybody Wants To Get To Heaven
But Nobody Wants To Die
02. Some Prayers Are Answered

The Sports Early Recordings ,Acetate. Recorded April 1977

"I just vaguely met people and dragged them into it.
I always wanted Andrew in the group as a guitarist
nd I had an idea for a rockabilly country sound.
But I always wanted to change it because I really
liked the MC5 and wanted to make it more like that as well."
Stephen Cummings
The Sports were one of the best bands to come out Melbourne
and one of the best from the 2nd half of the 70's full stop.
I loved this band and went on to follow the careers of both
Steven Cumming and Andrew Pendlebury.
This post could take me in many directions.
This 6 track demo, apart from being a rarity,
is also a wonderful recording of some nice songs.
A bit more rockabilly than the later stuff and all
the promise of the greatness of this band is there
in this first recording.

02 When We Got To The Taxi Rank
03 In Trouble With The Girls

The Sports - Play Dylan and Donovan
The Sports formed in 1976 in Melbourne, positioned to ride
the coming New wave music surge and become a much
loved Australian music icon.
Releasing some 8 records they spilt in 1981 and this
mini album was their swan song.
The bands lead singer Steven Cummings has gone on to
a successful solo career, releasing some of the best albums
to come out of this country, but he remains under the
commercial radar. The lead Guitarist Andrew Pendlebury
has also continued solo making some 4 fantastic solo
album which I have and will have to post some day.
He is considered Australia's greatest guitarist by many
and you do have to hear his work to believe it.
Fantastic little record by one of Australia's greatest
playing the songs of one of the greatest songwriters
ever and another 60's icon,
sounds like its to good to be true.
Fourth Time around - Bob Dylan
Her Jamaican rum
And when she did come, I asked her for some
She said, "No, dear"
I said, "Your words aren't clear
You'd better spit out your gum"
She screamed till her face got so red
Then she fell on the floor
And I covered her up and then
Thought I'd go look through her drawer
