Phil Melifont who played in 42nd Street has sent
me these demos from the band that Greg and
Darren Atkinson learnt their trade before going
onto the wonderful Ups and Downs.
I'll let Phil give us the history of this important
Brisbane band

1979 Greg A, Phil M, Darren A, 42nd Street42nd Street was a Brisbane based power-pop band
1979 – 1981 The band derived the name from a track
on Piper’s (Billy Squier) 1976 album
The original lineup was Greg Atkinson (Bass/Voc),
Darren Atkinson (Drums/Voc), Ken Allen (guitar),
Phil Mellifont (guitar) with some occasional vocals
by Steve Black. Ken Allen left the band in October
1979 just prior to the recording of the
released December 1979 For several months the
band played as a three piece and February 1980
the demo’s ‘No Money’ & ‘She’s Not Real’
were recorded.
Neil Coombe (guitar) joined the band around April
recorded to be included on Radio 4iP’s
‘That’s Queensland’ album.
In August 1980, 42nd Street gained third place in the
Queensland final of the ‘Hoadley’s Battle of the Bands’,
and at that time a number of demo’s were recorded
including ‘The Boys are After Me’, ‘Too Late’ and
a cover of The Records song ‘Starry Eyes’
The band moved to Sydney in April 1981 and like
many others broke up a few months later- shortly
after recording the demo ‘Tomorrow’

Ups n Downs touring again i see.. at the Hi Fi i think...
AWSEOME stuff! I loved Ups & Downs here in the USA, and bought all their stuff from "In The Shadows" onwards...saw them in Sydney on holiday in 1988 as well.....just bought the recent cd compilation, and was hoping there was more unreleased U&D out there....i remember there was an homemade compilation out that was available on the Big Heavy Stuff site some years back....anyone have any of that? thanks for the great blogsite-Jim H, Boston, MA, USA
Hi Bob -many thanks for the 42nd Street demos. However when I downloaded it, 2 tracks: Work it Out & Afraid of the Dark were missing. Any chance of posting these?

Hi Bob - thanks for the quick reply. Tried again using both mega upload & mediafire but still only get 6 tracks & the info sheet. Still missing the tracks: Work it Out & Afraid of the Dark. Very strange!

We shall have to ask Chuck as I dont own the record. Chuck only ripped the one track from 42nd street.
